Professor
Morihiro Maeda
He is professor of Soil Science at the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science, Okayama University, Japan. He received bachelor and master degrees in 1991 and 1993, respectively in Sanitary and Environmental Engineering from Kyoto University, Japan. He obtained his Ph. D. degree in Engineering at Kyoto University in 2002. He had worked as a technical researcher at the National Agricultural Research Center from 1993 to 2008. He had stayed as a visiting researcher at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences for a year of 1998. He moved as associate professor to the Graduate School of Environmental and Life Science of Okayama University in 2008, and became professor at the same university in 2016. His main research interests are nitrate leaching in upland fields, nitrous oxide emissions from organic matter, stable isotope ratios of biophilic elements, etc. He authored or coauthored over 50 original papers in refereed journals and 9 books. He is a member of editorial boards of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition (2007-2011, 2015-present) and Hydrological Research Letters (2016-present). He serves chair of Soil Environment Division of the Japanese Society of Soil Science and Plant Nutrition (JSSSPN) (2015-present) and had been vice-chair of the same division from 2004-2015. He received Honorable Award from the JSSSPN (2004) and Achievement Award for Young Scientists from the Foundation of Agricultural Sciences of Japan (2004). He contributed as an organizer to 8 international workshops and symposiums. At Okayama University, Dr. Maeda is head of active research projects on groundwater pollution with nitrogen in Vietnam and nitrous oxide emissions in soil disinfestation, and teaches Introductory Soil Science and Soil Quality & Management for undergraduate students, and Soil Use & Management and Soil Functions for graduate students. He is a chief coordinator of a bilateral Master’s program between Okayama and Hue Universities.

Soil has many physical and chemical functions, in which microorganisms play important roles in material flow and storage. Our missions are to propose the best soil management for solving environmental problems such as soil or water pollution and global warming gas emissions based on the scientific knowledge and understanding of soil systems.
